Flood Re thinks we’re all horribly underinsured for flood risk
Despite the growing risk of flooding in the UK, many homeowners are not taking the necessary steps to protect their homes. A recent survey found that 27% of homeowners do not think they will ever be flooded.
This is a concerning statistic, as flooding is a serious problem that can cause significant damage to homes and businesses. In 2022, there were over 100,000 flood claims in the UK, with the total cost of damage reaching over £2 billion.
To help raise awareness of the risks of flooding and to encourage homeowners to take action, Flood Re and the Environment Agency have launched a new campaign called Be Flood Smart. The campaign provides information on how to make homes more flood-resilient, including simple and cost-effective measures such as:
- Raising electrical sockets and white goods away from floor level
- Installing self-closing air bricks and flood-resistant doors
- Replacing flooring with waterproof tiling and grout
The Be Flood Smart campaign also provides information on how to prepare for a flood, including what to do if your home is flooded and how to get help.

If you live in an area that is at risk of flooding, it is important to take steps to protect your home. The Be Flood Smart campaign provides the information you need to do just that.
In addition to the Be Flood Smart campaign, there are a number of other things that can be done to reduce the risk of flooding. These include:
- Investing in flood defences
- Planning new developments in areas that are not at risk of flooding
- Raising awareness of the risks of flooding and how to prepare for a flood
By taking these steps, we can all help to make the UK a more flood-resilient country.
