GROHE Sense: the intelligent water security system, reducing the risks of water damage

Written by Roger Peverelli and Reggy de Feniks - Founders The DIA Community on Apr 30, 2018

German GROHE is a leading provider of sanitary fittings and a global brand for innovative sanitary products. They have an obsessive approach to eradicating waste and minimizing energy use. They developed GROHE Sense and GROHE Sense Guard, an App-controlled water security system for the residential segment to actively reduce the results of water damage. The combination of smart connected devices, intelligent device & cloud algorithms and the end user app create benefits for its users and allows GROHE to engage in new partnerships with insurers to jointly battle water damages.

Sense and Sense Guard are GROHE’s intelligent solutions for the smart home. They are created to address the issue of water damage in households. Water damage itself is an underestimated risk. More than half of households in Europe have experienced water damage at least once. 93% of the cases could have been prevented.

GROHE has collaborations with two insurance companies in Germany; Provinzial & Gothaer and is partnering with insurance companies in Sweden and Denmark. They also have a partnership with Nest, in which the Sense Guard and connected home devices from Nest work together (marked with the Works with Nest badge). The Sense Guard can automatically shut off or open water pipes based on Nest’s Home/Away status indicating that homeowners are home or away.

The Sense Guard won the prestigious iF Gold Award, a Reddot design award and the German design award. The US Fortune magazine included GROHE in its “Change the World” ranking of 2017.

How it works
GROHE Sense is a smart water sensor. Easily placed on the floor, it can detect water retention. When the base of the sensor comes into contact with water, it gives an alert. The water sensor also measures the room temperature and humidity.

Being installed in the central water line of the house by a professional installer, GROHE Sense Guard serves as a smart water controller. It measures the system temperature to indicate a risk of frost or detects leaks and shuts off the water supply automatically. A micro leak test is conducted once every 24 hours by which even the smallest droplet leaks in the cold-water pipes can be detected.

App-controlled water sensor to prevent domestic water damage
The GROHE Sense water security system is based on industry standard wireless LAN technology, controlled through the GROHE ONDUS App. It offers the highest level of water safety, allowing to continually monitor and control the Sense and Sense Guard, whenever and wherever. Users receive a notification on their smartphone connected to the Internet if there is a water problem at home. The water supply can be shut off using the app to prevent more damage. Additionally, the app has a feature that allows users to track their domestic water consumption.
