PAI Health: personalized prescription for exercise

Written by Roger Peverelli and Reggy de Feniks - Founders The DIA Community on Sep 6, 2018

PAI Health is a new health technology software company under the same management as Mio Global, known for its innovation in heart rate monitor wearable technology. The Canadian company is continuing to leverage their expertise in biometric sensing and algorithm development for the health and wellness industry, with a focus on risk management solutions for the insurance, healthcare, and corporate wellness industries.

PAI (Personal Activity Intelligence, pronounced ‘pi’), is the first scientifically validated score that prescribes personal activity levels for optimal health. Their proprietary technology provides a cardiorespiratory fitness score based on personal profile and heart rate data, which is an accurate assessment and predictor of long term health. It empowers people by providing personalized insights on how much exercise they need to live a longer, healthier life.

PAI allows organizations to assess, monitor and guide their people to better health to reduce risk and costs. Providing individuals with motivational guidance on recommended physical activity levels for better health. PAI Health’s mission is to optimize anyone’s path to being healthier by making PAI available worldwide through partnerships with corporate wellness and health platforms, insurers, employers, wearable manufacturers, health providers and other industry partners.

The company has received recognition within the industry as being a groundbreaking metric that can give wearables greater purpose by providing meaning to heart rate data, and positively impact people’s health through a personalized prescription for exercise.
The cloud-based software platform integrates with other devices and systems to expand the PAI ecosystem. PAI Health is making its proprietary technology available to other wearable brands and health platforms, allowing PAI to potentially be available to over 40 million users by the end of 2018.

Extending lives by an average of 5 years
PAI is a scientifically-backed and has the potential to extend people’s lives by an average of 5 years. The proprietary algorithm translates heart rate data into a simple, meaningful score that guides people on how much activity they need to live a longer, healthier life. The purpose of the research behind PAI was to develop a single, easy-to-understand activity tracking metric that could help people manage their health. Most people understand that exercise is good for them, but it’s hard to stay motivated and how do you know if you are doing enough?

PAI research has been conducted using the HUNT study data, one of the largest health studies ever conducted involving 45,000 people over 25 years. It has been scientifically proven that those who maintained a PAI score at or above 100 lived an average of 5 years longer than those who were inactive, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and other lifestyle diseases by up to 25 percent.

PAI can also provide insurers, employers and medical providers with health insights and population trends so that they can better manage health risks and costs. It also allows insurers to innovate with new product and pricing models.
Benefits for insurers

How does it work?
The purpose of the research behind PAI was to develop a single, easy-to-understand activity tracking metric that could help people manage their health. Most people understand that exercise is good for them, but it’s hard to stay motivated and how do you know if you are doing enough?

Since it is based on a personal profile and heart rate data, PAI is a way to track a body’s response to exercise and the associated health benefits. It tracks all of the activity based on the personal heart rate data and translates it into an easy-to-understand score giving the health effects of the exercise.

Goals such as 10,000 steps per day’ or ’30-minutes of activity per day’ tend to be vague and misleading. PAI analyzes the heart rate and provides a single measure indicating whether or not a person is getting enough exercise. A person can choose any activity that gets his heart rate up, no matter how many steps he takes. PAI motivates to move with meaning with a simple goal that is personalized to each user’s experience.
Why we selected PAI Health for DIA Munich
The goal of PAI Health is to provide meaningful data insights from biometric data to consumers and insurers; improving cardiorespiratory fitness and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
This data will allow insurers to augment their customer risk profiles, enabling them to offer better tailored products and pricing as well as introduce and monitor wellness programs.

In addition to helping people live longer, PAI Health can optimize operational efficiencies for payers and providers and facilitate a preventative approach to managing chronic disease.

Who is PAI Health?
The Canadian company was originally founded in 1999 and has over 20 years’ experience in world-class accurate biometric sensor technology and algorithms (formerly Mio Global).

PAI Health’s mission is to make PAI available to consumers world-wide with the goal of positively impacting world health. To achieve this goal, they are actively building partnerships to extend their software and algorithms to businesses via cloud-based services and licensing.
Their strategic alliances include corporate wellness and health platforms, insurance companies, wearable manufacturers, and other industry partners.

In 2017, the company was re-structured under the name PAI Health focusing on device-agnostic software that provides meaningful data insights from biometric data to both consumers and insurers.
PAI Health has raised over $9M to date.  The company also has a strategic collaboration with Gen Re, the global reinsurer. The company is led by Peter Taylor (CEO) and Adrian Pape (CFO).

PAI Health has done pilots with insurers and employers, including a pilot with Norwegian insurer Gjensidige and is moving on to the second phase based on the success of that initial pilot.
