Pathmate Technologies – Manoa: a data-driven digital coach improving people’s heart health
High blood pressure is the leading cause of premature death and the number one driver for healthcare costs all over the world. One in three adults suffers from high blood pressure. However, only about 50% of the people diagnosed achieve the recommended blood pressure target levels, resulting in an unnecessarily high risk for cardiovascular events such as heart attacks or strokes.
After leaving the doctor’s office, patients often struggle with their daily self-management jobs, such as measuring blood pressure, taking daily medication and adapting to a healthy diet. This lack of support, feedback and empowerment makes patients feel alone and insecure and ultimately leads to poor blood pressure control and therapy adherence.
To tackle this challenge, Pathmate has developed Manoa, a digital therapeutic (DTx) solution that supports people with managing high blood pressure and other modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. It offers scalable yet personalized support for people with high blood pressure in their everyday life.
Manoa is an app that acts as a data-driven digital coach, combining behavioral science, data coming from smart devices, and the latest medical research to provide highly personalized and scalable support to improve people’s heart health.
Pathmate has 8 health insurers on board in Switzerland and Germany that provide Manoa to their customers (people with high blood pressure) to increase customer satisfaction and decrease healthcare costs for cardiovascular diseases such as strokes or heart attacks. Among its customers are Generali, Signal Iduna, HanseMerkur and CSS. Manoa has been downloaded by over 20’000 people in Germany and Switzerland and received great user feedback with an average app rating of 4.7 with over 2’000 reviews and an NPS of 60.
First data analysis shows the efficacy of Manoa with patients using Manoa decreasing their systolic blood pressure up to 6 mmHg after using Manoa for 8-16 weeks. Moreover, Manoa is registered as a medical device and the first app ever that has been certified by the German hypertension league.
How does it work?
Manoa is an iOS or Android app that helps a client to measure blood pressure and give personal advice and recommendations. It allows for scanning the results of 3rd party blood pressure devices using the app and smartphone camera. Making it this easy results in a high frequency of measuring.
Insurers that work with Pathmate, give their clients an access code to use the Manoa app.
The measured data is collected in the app and shown in a report that helps clients to view and track their results and can also be shared with doctors to get expert advice. The app itself also gives recommendations for an easy lifestyle, which results in higher engagement and lower risks.
